The Challenge

Delbury Hall is a distinguished country estate in the village of Craven Arms, Shropshire. The Georgian manor house was built in the 1750s and has been the home of the Wrigley family since 1910.  The restored Coach House Barn and newly built Orangery are the spectacular venues for weddings.

Cool Services Ltd was commissioned to design and install air conditioning solutions across two quite different spaces on the estate — a historic chapel and a marquee — each presenting its own installation challenges.

The Coach House Barn: Discreet High-Wall Split Systems

To ensure year-round comfort without compromising the chapel’s character, our engineers installed two Daikin 10 kW high-wall split systems. The indoor units were positioned at high-wall level to minimise visual impact, while the external condensing units were placed directly outside on rubber anti-vibration feet. All external pipework was housed in trunking selected to complement the existing guttering and downpipes, maintaining the building’s aesthetic. Condensate drainage runs via gravity to the adjacent gravel border, keeping the installation clean and unobtrusive. Each system is operated independently via handheld remote control.

The Orangery: Floor-Standing Units for Wide-Area Coverage

The marquee installation called for a different approach. Two Daikin 14 kW floor-standing indoor units were specified to handle the larger open space, positioned on opposite sides of the entrance to maximise air distribution throughout the venue. The external units sit on pre-prepared concrete plinths on rubber feet. Pre-installation requirements, including the concrete bases and 75 mm ducting sleeves for pipework channels were coordinated with the estate’s contractors ahead of our arrival, ensuring a smooth and efficient installation process.

The Result

Given the inherent difficulty of heating and cooling such challenging spaces, the owners of Delbury Hall had genuine doubts about how well the brief could be met – or indeed whether it could be met at all. Those concerns have since been firmly put to rest.

The success of both installations comes down to the expertise of the Cool Services project management and engineering teams and their thorough understanding of Daikin equipment performance. Selecting the right units for each environment and positioning them to work with the geometry of each space has made the critical difference. The systems deliver effective heating and cooling precisely where it is needed. They cope comfortably with high occupancy and can switch between heating and cooling modes with ease, all while keeping energy use well within expectations.

The estate owner is thoroughly delighted with the result and candid in saying he wishes the systems had been installed far sooner, since guests can now enjoy every event at Delbury Hall in genuine comfort, whatever the season.
